Birmingham Doctors Travel To Nicaragua

MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala. (WIAT) - This week 70 volunteers will be traveling to the Central American country of Nicaragua to help the needy get the medical care they normally cannot receive.
For 12 years Dr. Rudy Vargas has taken a group of Birmingham doctors to his homeland .
"Friends For Rudy" started with a small group but now it has grown to 70 volunteers with 27 specialty doctors.
they say it is important to get these people in need help. small procedures that we may take for granted could be life changing for them.
"they don't have needles they don't have syringes they don't have the bottles of anesthesia." said Optometrist Dr. Mike Callahan.
They rely on donations to fun the $3 Million dollar mission. Any medicine or equipment they do not use..they will leave behind at the Alabama Health Clinic in Grenada where there are two physicians on staff all year round.
