Issues to be addressed:

  A. The World Health Organization indicates that minorities, in this case Hispanics, have a higher incidence of diabetes.
    1. For those suffering the dreaded disease of diabetes, glucose testing will be done on site for both blood and urine.
    2. We will provide diabetic education one on one as well as educational material.
    3. We will organize support groups and meetings to improve the quality of life for diabetic patients.
    4. We will supply oral medication, insulin, syringes and where possible instruction and material for home glucose monitoring.  Many of the patients will come for daily monitoring.

  B. Due to the environment, poor hygiene habits and primarily a lack of income for medical help, ophthalmic problems in Nicaragua are rampant.  Most recently there was a virtual epidemic of conjunctivitis.
    1. Treating problems such as conjunctivitis and other vision problems will be a focus of the clinic.
    2. Although we have secured some of the equipment necessary for providing ophthalmic services, we need a chair, a refractometer, a slit lamp and ultrasound. These items will assist in early detection of:
      a. Cataracts occurring early in life
.
      b. Corneal disease
.
      c. Diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of blindness.

  C. General medical services and medicines are also needed by the indigent who cannot to purchase prescriptions if seen in an emergency room.
    1. Vital signs will be taken at the clinic and blood pressure medications will be monitored.
    2. Prescriptions will be filled on site with generic medications purchased in Nicaragua.
